How To: Track Multiple Booth Locations
Renting at two salons? Track and compare income across locations using tags. Find out which chair is actually worth the rent.
How To: Track Multiple Booth Locations
Renting chairs at two salons? Working at multiple studios? You need to know which location is actually more profitable—not just which one feels busier.
Here's how to track and compare income across multiple locations using Velvet Ledger's tag system.
Option A: Use Tags (Recommended)
Tags are perfect when you offer the same services at different locations. This is the simplest approach for most booth renters.
Step 1: Create Location Tags
- Go to Settings → Tag Management
- Click Create Tag
- Add your locations:
- Name: "Main St Salon"
- Label: "📍 Main St Salon" (emoji optional but helpful for quick visual ID)
- Choose a color (e.g., blue)
- Repeat for each location:
- "📍 Downtown Booth"
- "📍 Westside Studio"
Pro Tip: Include the address in the tag name if you have multiple locations with similar names.
Step 2: Tag Your Income by Location
Every time you log income:
- Go to Finances → Add Income
- Enter your service details (amount, category, etc.)
- Click Add Tag → Select your location tag (e.g., "📍 Main St Salon")
- Save
That's it! Now this income is linked to that specific location.
Step 3: Compare Locations in Reports
Here's where it gets powerful:
- Go to Finances page
- Use the Tag filter in the filter bar
- Select "📍 Main St Salon"
- Now you see only transactions from that location
What You Can Compare
| Location | Monthly Revenue | Booth Rent | Net Profit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main St Salon | $4,200 | $1,200 | $3,000 |
| Downtown Booth | $2,800 | $800 | $2,000 |
Insight: Main St brings in more revenue, but after accounting for the higher rent, is the extra $1,000 profit worth the longer commute? That's a question only you can answer—but now you have the data.
Option B: Use Categories (For Different Service Mixes)
If your locations have completely different service offerings, categories might work better.
When to Use Categories Instead
- Main St Salon: You do color, cuts, extensions
- Downtown Booth: You only do blowouts and styling
- The service mix is so different that separate categories make sense
How to Set It Up
-
Create location-based income categories:
- "Main St Salon - Color"
- "Main St Salon - Cuts"
- "Downtown Booth - Blowouts"
- "Downtown Booth - Styling"
-
Log income to the appropriate location-specific category
-
Use Revenue Analysis to see the breakdown by category
Comparing Locations: A Real Example
Let's say you track for 3 months:
Main St Salon
- Revenue: $12,600
- Booth Rent: $3,600
- Supplies: $1,200
- Net Profit: $7,800
- Hours Worked: 180
- Profit per Hour: $43.33
Downtown Booth
- Revenue: $8,400
- Booth Rent: $2,400
- Supplies: $600
- Net Profit: $5,400
- Hours Worked: 100
- Profit per Hour: $54.00
The Insight
Downtown actually pays $10.67 more per hour even though total revenue is lower. If you could fill more hours at Downtown, that's where your time is better spent.
Quick Setup Checklist
- Create a tag for each location (Settings → Tag Management)
- Tag every income transaction with its location
- Track booth rent as a recurring expense (tag it too!)
- Filter by tag monthly to compare location performance
- Calculate profit-per-hour to find your most valuable location
Pro Tips
-
Tag your expenses too — Booth rent, supplies bought for a specific location, parking costs. Tag them all to see true profit per location.
-
Set up recurring transactions — If your booth rent is the same every month, set it as recurring so you don't forget to log it.
-
Review monthly — A quick 5-minute check each month keeps you informed without becoming a chore.
-
Consider commute time — Downtown might pay more per hour, but if the commute adds 2 hours to your day, factor that into your decision.
